Which one to take

Which Audi does which job

Three Audis, and they are three completely different arguments.

The Q7 is the sensible one and the most booked: seven seats in three rows, four-wheel drive that earns its keep in February, and a cabin quiet enough to take a call from the back. It is the airport run, the ski transfer and the half-term week.

The RS Q8 is the same body with a very different engine in it — an estate-sized car that behaves like a sports car, hired by people who want the performance and still have to bring four others. The R8 Spyder is the actual supercar: a naturally aspirated V10 behind your head, two seats and a roof that folds. It is a weekend car and a birthday car, and almost nobody hires it for a fortnight.

All three go out chauffeured or self-drive, delivered to an address in London or to any London airport, quoted as one figure with VAT, mileage and comprehensive insurance inside it. Self-drive on the R8 sits in the stricter eligibility tier — 30 to 70, with a licence held five years — while the Q7 sits in the standard one.

In footprint, very little. In purpose, everything. The Q7 is the seven-seat one: three rows, though the boot is small with the third one up. The RS Q8 gives up the third row and spends the difference on pace, so it carries five people rather than seven in a car the same size. If the deciding factor is how many are travelling, it is the Q7. If everyone fits in five seats and the way it drives is the point, it is the RS Q8.

Seven people, yes — but it is the second half of the question that usually decides it, and the honest answer is that seven and their cases is the one combination the Q7 will not do. With the third row up the boot is small, and that row suits children or a short hop better than it suits adults across a long one. Five people and a full boot is what the car is genuinely good at, which is why it ends up on airport transfers and corporate accounts rather than the RS Q8, which is the same size of car with five seats in it. It goes out chauffeured or self-drive, and it is delivered to an address in London or to the terminal. If the party is right on the limit, say how many people and how many cases when you enquire and you will get a straight answer.

The R8 Spyder is a supercar, so it falls in the stricter of the two tiers our published terms set: drivers aged 30 to 70, with a full licence held five years. The Q7 sits in the standard tier, 25 to 70 with three years, and which side of the line the RS Q8 falls is confirmed when you enquire rather than guessed at here. Additional drivers are named at booking and insured on the same basis, and every licence is checked at handover rather than taken on trust. A chauffeured hire carries no age requirement, so the tiers only matter when you are the one driving.

All three go out with a driver, though only two of them are built for it. The Q7 is the obvious one, and worth the arithmetic: with a chauffeur, one of its seven seats is the driver’s, so six of you travel. The RS Q8 carries four the same way. The R8 Spyder seats two, so a chauffeured R8 means one passenger beside the driver, which people do book, usually for an arrival or a birthday rather than a day of meetings. The car comes to you either way, in London or at the airport.
