Volvo hire in London

The seven-seat XC90 and the XC60. Neither is here to be admired, which is the point.

v1.1

The choice between the two Volvos is decided by the third row, and by what still fits behind it.

Which one to take

Two cars, and what each one is for

Two Volvos, and between them they cover most of what people actually need a car for.

The XC90 is the seven-seater. It is the one to book when there are six or seven of you and the alternative is hiring two cars — an airport run for a family, a weekend where the luggage is skis, a fortnight where the third row gets used twice and is still the reason you chose it. Seven seats or five, a boot that is honest about which, and the build the marque is known for.

The XC60 is the same car for five people and considerably easier to park. It is the sensible London week: quiet, automatic, and the size that fits a residential street without an argument.

Neither is here to be admired, which is the point. If you are hiring for a fortnight, or for a family that includes children, this is usually the pair worth comparing before anything with more badge on it. Chauffeured or self-drive, delivered to an address in London or to any London airport, quoted as one figure with VAT, mileage and comprehensive insurance inside it. Child seats can be fitted — say how many, and how old.

Count the people first. The XC90 is the seven-seater, and it is the one to book when six or seven of you would otherwise be hiring two cars. The XC60 is the same idea for five, and it is markedly easier to park on a residential street, which matters more in London than most people expect. Both are automatic, and either goes out chauffeured or self-drive. Self-drive is 25 to 70 with a full licence held three years for most of the fleet, and 30 to 70 with five years for supercars and premium luxury cars, with the tier confirmed when you enquire.

Seven seats and seven people's luggage are two different questions. The third row folds into the floor, and with it up the boot is small: enough for a school run or a couple of soft bags, not for a family of seven flying out for a fortnight. Most people in that position fold one seat down and travel six, which is the honest version of the answer. If it has to be seven and all the cases, say so when you enquire and you hear it before you book rather than at the kerb.

Tell us how many and the ages, and they are fitted before the car reaches you rather than wrestled into place on the pavement. The XC90's Isofix points are in the middle row and the XC60's are in the rear seat, so on the seven-seater a child seat sits in front of the third row rather than in it, which is worth checking if the plan is two child seats and a full car. Seats also take up room the bags were going to have, so count them as luggage as well as passengers when you tell us the trip.

Both sit high and both are sure-footed in weather, which is usually why people ask for them in January rather than in June. Winter tyres, a tow bar, a roof rack or a roof box are fitted at our end before the car leaves us, so ask for them when you book rather than on the day. London delivery is inside the figure, a journey that starts further out is quoted per journey inside the same total, and the mileage allowance is agreed before you pay. If the drive leaves the UK, say so when you enquire: that is agreed in the hire agreement, not assumed.
