Which one to take
Start with the day the car has to do, not the badge on the back.
In London a 4x4 is rarely hired for the mud. It is hired for the height, the boot, the back seat, and the fact that one car can do the school run on Tuesday and a Scottish estate on Friday.
The Range Rovers are the core of it — the Sport, the standard wheelbase, and the long-wheelbase Autobiography and SV — and they are what most people mean when they ask for a luxury 4x4. The Land Rover Defenders are for when the road actually ends: the five-seat 110 and the eight-seat 130, in genuine off-road specification when the trip needs it, with tyres, tow bars and racks fitted before the car leaves us. The Mercedes G63 sits between the two and gets asked for by name more than anything else on this page.
Beyond those: the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and the Lamborghini Urus for the days the 4x4 is the occasion, the Ferrari Purosangue and the Audi RS Q8 for the days it is the drive, and the Q7, X5, Cayenne, GLS, XC90 and XC60 for the days it is simply the right car. Start with where the passengers sit. The P400 is the standard-wheelbase car — five seats, a six-cylinder petrol engine and a full-size boot — and there are two petrol-electric hybrids on the same five-seat pattern. The long-wheelbase cars put the extra length behind the front seats instead: the Vogue LWB and the Autobiography are both diesel, and the SV specification sits above the Autobiography. The Sport is the shorter answer, in the current shape or as the SVR, with its supercharged petrol V8 and the exhaust to match. The Evoque is the small one, short enough to park, with a boot that takes two large cases rather than four.
Four of them have three rows. The Mercedes GLS seats seven and folds its third row flat. The Audi Q7 has seven belts, though the back pair suit children or short journeys. The Volvo XC90 seats seven and drops its third row into the floor. The eight-seat Defender carries eight in three rows. The catch on all four is the boot: with the last row up there is room for hand luggage and little else, and on the Defender it is a slot behind the third row. The Cayenne, the XC60 and the X5 seat five, as does the armoured X5, which is a phone call rather than a form.
The Defenders first. The 110 has Terrain Response drive modes, four-wheel drive, five seats and a tall, square boot, and the eight-seat car is the same thing with a third row in it. The Mercedes G63 has permanent four-wheel drive and three differential locks. A Range Rover does the same work in more comfort. At the other end of the page the BMW X5 drives more like a large estate and suits a motorway run with luggage better than anything muddy. Tell us the ground when you enquire: tyres, tow bars and racks are fitted before the car leaves us.
Not the body. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan has a petrol V12, rear-hinged rear doors, a split two-part tailgate, umbrellas in the doors and four or five seats. The Ferrari Purosangue has four individual seats and rear doors that open wide and close on a button. The Lamborghini Urus takes four or five and a weekend's luggage. The Audi RS Q8 keeps the ordinary Q8's five seats and boot, with quattro four-wheel drive and a petrol V8. Self-drive is tiered: 25 to 70 with a licence held three years for most of the fleet, 30 to 70 with five years for supercars and premium luxury vehicles, confirmed when you enquire.
