Which one to take

The question is rarely which one is fastest.

A supercar is hired for a specific day. A birthday, an anniversary, a shoot, a track booking, or a drive somebody has been planning for a year.

The Lamborghinis are the loudest part of it — the Huracán as a coupé and as a Spyder, and the Aventador with its LP700 Roadster, which is the V12 with the doors that go up. The Ferraris are the other half of the argument: the mid-engined 488, and the California, which folds its roof away and has a boot, and is the one people hire for a whole weekend rather than an afternoon.

Then the two grand tourers. The Aston Martin DB11 is the one to take across a country rather than around a town. The Audi R8 Spyder is a naturally aspirated V10 with a folding roof and, unusually for this list, a car you can drive on every day of the hire without it becoming hard work.

Self-drive is fully insured and sits in the stricter of the two eligibility tiers: 30 to 70, with a licence held five years. Chauffeured is the usual choice when the car is being photographed more than it is driven. Delivered to an address in London, or to the venue — tell us where it needs to be standing, and when.

Yes, and it changes the arithmetic. The Huracán, the Huracán Spyder, the Aventador, the LP700 Roadster, the 488 and the R8 Spyder all seat two, so the driver takes one of those seats and the car carries a single passenger. The DB11 and the California are two-plus-twos, and their rear seats hold coats and bags rather than adults. It is what people ask for when the car spends most of the day standing at a venue rather than moving, and the car is brought to that address and collected from it afterwards.

Four of the eight take their roof off, and two of those are the open version of a car standing next to them on this page. The Huracán Spyder folds a fabric roof away electrically, and its rear window drops on its own if you want the V10 louder with the roof still up. The LP700 Roadster is the open Aventador: two carbon panels lift out by hand and then live in the front boot, which is where a bag would otherwise go. The R8 Spyder's roof is fabric as well, and the California's is metal, so that one shuts into a proper coupé when the weather turns.

Not much, and most of it travels in the nose. The 488, the Huracán, the Huracán Spyder and the Aventador each take about one soft bag in the front boot and have nowhere else to put one. The R8 Spyder manages two in the same place, and with the LP700 Roadster's roof panels stowed there is effectively no room left at all. Two of the eight are different: the California keeps a usable boot with the roof up, and the DB11 takes two soft bags for a weekend. Those are the two to ask about if the hire runs longer than a day.

Ask before you book rather than on the morning. Where a car may be driven is set per vehicle on the rental agreement you sign before collection, along with the fuel policy and the insurance excess, and it is the same clause that covers taking a car abroad. A birthday, a shoot or a long drive out of London is the ordinary use of these eight. A circuit is not, so it has to be agreed in writing beforehand with the car named. Tell us what the day involves when you enquire and it is settled then.
